O Santos foi penalizado em decorrência do incidente envolvendo uma cusparada direcionada ao jogador Reinaldo, do Mirassol, durante uma partida do Campeonato Brasileiro. O Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD) impôs ao clube uma multa de R$ 15 mil, com fundamento no Código Brasileiro de Justiça Desportiva.
A sanção aplicada ao Santos baseou-se no artigo 213, inciso 1º, que menciona a responsabilidade da equipe em “deixar de tomar providências capazes de prevenir e reprimir desordens em sua praça de desporto”. Apesar da penalização, o clube conseguiu evitar uma punição mais severa, como a perda de mando de campo.
